Description:
Our first Ocean Friendly Garden was planted July 6th, 2013 at the Palm Beach Zoo thanks to coordination and efforts by our OFG Chair, Jennifer Bevan and Co-Chair DD Halpern. We approached the zoo with our plan to plant a garden and with a few months of work and plans, we were able to see it through. Special thanks to the zoo staff, volunteers who prepped the area, cut away dead foliage, dug holes, spread organic mulch, raked and planted. As of right now, 30% of runoff coming off an adjacent roof is captured. We are working on gutters which would help us capture close to 100% of the runoff.
Currently OFG Chair, Jennifer and 2 other wonderful volunteers maintain the garden once a week rotating which week one will preform the work and take pictures of the progress.
Sources of materials:
- Natural mulch from a local garden shop for a very low price.
- An awesome rain barrel came from RainLife Rain Barrels in Lake Worth.
- Free rain gutters from "My Gutter Company." It helps capture about 30% of the runoff from the roof.
- Additional plants to enrich the look of the garden from the wonderful volunteers at "The Four Seasons" Lake Worth.
The garden is located in front of the “Florida Pioneer House,” in between the river otter and flamingo displays.
