  This ocean friendly garden was installed by Surfrider in June 2010. This Ocean Friendly Garden was created because the owner wanted to prevent runoff going into his favorite local surf spot (down the street). A drip irrigation system was installed to help get the native plants and fruit trees established, and rainwater is now the main source of irrigation (a 90% reduction in water use). The whole site is mulched with tree trimmings. There is no wet- or dry-weather runoff from the garden. For the one area that still does generate some runoff, the owner plans to cut 6 inch swaths across his driveway to either absorb the water or direct it into the landscape.
