Troon Avenue Backyard, Los Angeles, CA

  • Date: Jun 4 2014 Time: 17:31
  • Description:
We converted from turf & exotics garden: - Plants: we kept the Melaleuca and avocado trees, and planted lots of climate appropriate and natives (see list below). - Redirected downspouts and French drain to spill into a bio-swale. We cut into the drainpipe from the French drain that drained the backyard, so that feeds the swale, as does the overflow from the rain barrel. When the swale overflows (rarely), it goes back into the “downstream” portion of the French drainpipe. Except for design and some of the drip irrigation work, my wife and I did all of the work. We got an turf replacement rebate from our local water retailer, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. Location - near Butterfield Road.
