Description:
Lawn and Indian Hawthorne hedge were removed to create this garden which we designed. It features California coastal sage scrub native plants and a dry stream bed. The river rocks were salvaged from a neighbor, plants came from Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano, and Las Pilitas Nursery in Santa Margarita. Gorilla hair mulch - shredded redwood bark that is a waste product of the lumber industry – was used to encourage the growth of mycorrhizal fungi, important for native plants to flourish. A crew dug out the lawn but the rest of the work was done with the help of friends, neighbors and our OFG Surfrider friends. We qualified for a City of Long Beach Lawn-to-Garden rebate which covered all costs.
