  Turf grass was removed and the City of Santa Monica convened a contest to pick the top 3 designs voted on by the public. They sliced the area into 3 sections, allotting one for each design. They are 3 distinct designs, but they fit together well. All 3 included climate appropriate plants, drip irrigation, permeable hardscape, and mulch. One garden includes planters for vegetables. And the one section closest to an adjacent building directs the building's downspout into an infiltration basin, which helps irrigation the garden, hydrate soil, recharge groundwater, and prevent flooding. A hands-on workshop was held to help install the last part of one section.
