  • Description:
The garden owner attended an OFG class hosted by Surfrider and West Basin Municipal Water District, and taught by G3/The Green Gardens Group. She then enlisted a G3 Certified Professional to conduct a site evaluation of her landscape and hardscape in how best to "apply CPR - Conservation, Permeability and Retention," the principles of OFG. She did some homework about what plants would work well with her soil type, amount of sunlight and slope (which is pretty steep). She then created a simple planting plan, using small or large circles to represent the mature size of the plant so that she wouldn't over-plant and unnecessarily generate green waste. A friend of her's is a member of Surfrider's West LA/Malibu Chapter and suggested she ask if the Chapter would help her host a Surfrider Garden Assistance Party, or GAP. The Chapter agreed and helped transform 1,000 sq. ft. of kikuyu grass (aka "devil grass" or crab grass): - the first workday focused on removing the grass by hand (no chemicals). - a second workday focused on sheet mulching (layering compost tea, compost, a paper layer, then lots of mulch) and planting. A strand of grass has appeared here and there - and is easily pulled out.
