Description
We just built a house and have invested in reducing storm water runoff on our property. A trailer was on site. We recycled 80% of the trailer and built in the cleared area. We only lost one mature laurel oak and two ailing walnut trees to build the house. To help with stormwater, we even installed French drains. With a permeable drive, we have almost no stormwater run-off. We have no grass in the yard portion of our home except in the designated right of way for the town. After building, we left the right of way areas with natural grasses, no sod. All plantings are designed to attract birds and bees. All yard areas are mulch or pavers that do not run off (sunken area) into the road. We have French drains capturing from the room, a turnstone/rock drive and mulch. I would guess at least 90% of the roof runoff is captured and prevented from entering the storm drain. We DO NOT use chemicals.
We did all the work, including the driveway, ourselves. Everything, including drive and plants, was around $8000. The French drains were around $10,000. Would love the join the OFG team!
Additional Data
Permeable ground - How large is your OFG area? (in sq. ft.): 3880'
Water saved - How much have you reduced your water bill? (percent reduction): It's a new home, but we never go over the minimum
Runoff prevented - How much runoff is captured, e.g., roof, driveway? (in square feet): 1000
Share your plant list: Except for a few impatients I planted under the mature laurel oaks, I have all perennials for flowers. Trees/shrubs we have planted include crepe myrtles, a live oak, magnolia, camellia, jasmine, privet, roses and red cedar to build a barrier between a neighbor who uses lots of lawn chemicals and ourselves.. I hand pull all unwanted vegetation and use cinnamon and chalk to discourage ants. Also have iris, tulips, daffodils and azaleas for spring beauty. The back yard was kept natural with the original trees, which include laurel oaks and yaupon holly, wild magnolias, red honeysuckle and white honeysuckle have been cleared of Virginia creeper and cat briar. There is a sumac tree that was on the property and when we bought it and I kept it because the caterpillars LOVE to eat it up in mid summer. Feeds the birds! I had to build a greenhouse to have an organic garden due to the number of chemicals neighbors use, but I use water caught with warmed up bath water & rain caught in buckets (working on barrels with the French drain). I have shade cloths up so what I do water in the greenhouse doesn't evaporate readily.
